Jean-Marie Garde keeps on producing old school Pomerol that we can all be grateful still exists. Dark ruby in colour, plenty of juice, this has just a hint of grilled oak and coffee bean without going too far, 15ha estate. Scores from me vary pretty widely per vintage, because they tend to be influenced by wider weather conditions but it's a success in 2023. The blend given is as planted in the vineyard, not specific to the vintage.
William Kelley - Wine Advocate: 90-92/100
Lisa Perrotti-Brown - Wine Independent: 87-89/100
A blend of 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Malbec, the 2023 Clos Rene has a deep garnet-purple color. It comes barreling out with notes of plum preserves, cedar, and wild thyme, followed by hints of redcurrant jelly, black truffles, and fertile loam. The medium-bodied palate is lightly chewy, with a lively line and just enough expressive fruit, finishing with a savory lift.
